Final Art Project- Spilled Memory

Spilled Memory
A Tribute to Friends

The people pictured here are some of the greatest friends I have, and that I have ever had. There are a few close friends not pictured here due to limitations on space. Each one of them is different in their humor, their opinions, their walks- but they all have one thing in common. They've all stood by me through this year. It hasn't been easy for me, and it even harder for them. I mean, they had to deal with me. Deal with me spiraling downwards due to my parents' divorce, my grandfather's health issues, and some other events I would rather not name. This year has spilled out quickly and darkly much like the flow of ink and has been hard for all of us. Each one of these people, these best friends, have endured through the thick and thin with me and we have stayed together. I have hurt each and every one of them, a few have hurt me, and some have hurt each other; but despite our raw, aching wounds we helped the others heal before we fixed ourselves. These men and women laid out on this picture are all equally extremely important to me and I could not have made it through this year without them.

Thank you.
All of you.
Pictured or not,
Thank you for being there for me in these trying times.

Progress pics

Set the Scene

The table has been cleaned and papers laid out. some papers trashed and a lamp set out and an ink bottle on top of more papers. I'm ready to spill!

Post-Spill

This was fun. Spilled the ink, splattered it a little bit, and doodled something of a landscape onto it. My next upload will be of the finished piece itself, so be prepared!

Sister Wendy Beckett

"The experiential test of whether this art is great or good,
or minor or abysmal, is the effect it has on your own
sense of the world and yourself.
Great art changes you."

-Sister Wendy Beckett

Art is declared "good" by whether or not it has an effect on you. If it changes the way you think. Art is impactful.

Pulp Mag 1- Hero of Hyperion

The moment is dire. Roland, the king of a bandit group called the Crimson Raiders, has Handsome Jack's daughter Angel at gunpoint. Jack hears her screaming in fear through his Echo communicator, and rushes to the rescue. Digistructing into the room with rage and fear in his heart, he raises his revolver at Roland. Will Hyperion's hero save his daughter in time or will the bandit king slay her? Who truly is Jack's daughter and why did we not know she existed? Find out in this new edition of Hero of Hyperion- Where Angels Fear to Tread, Part One!

This was a fun project and definitely my favourite thus far. Jack, the hero, was given somewhat of a halo due to the light of the teleport and to signify his role as the hero. Roland has an aura of darkness, as all villains do, and stands threateningly over Angel.

Pulp Project HoHyp stage 1: Introduction

Pulp.

Inexpensive fiction magazines printed on wood pulp paper.
These Pulp magazines have magnificent covers depicting scenes of great heroes, heinous villains, and beautiful damsels in distress, all caught in the point of great excitement.
Pulp magazines gave birth to characters such as Conan the Barbarian and the Punisher.
This is the beginning of my first Pulp cover. It is based on the scene in Borderlands 2 after you fight and free the powerful Siren named Angel, the antagonist Handsome Jack's daughter, from her power-draining prison in the "Crisis Core Angel" facilities. However, in the true form of propaganda, the roles have been switched. Handsome Jack (on the left) is depicted as a hero and the real hero, Roland (on the left) will be holding a gun to Angel's head.

Anachronism: unfinished and unhappy

Anachronistic portrait of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The only piece of this that is mine is the background. It's kinda my front yard.

MOAR progress!

Some more progress. I am about to have to go out, so tonight I'll be putting the final finishing touches on it.

progress

There is some really heavy editing coming tonight. say goodbye to the normal background, and maybe a few of the people are getting replaced. i don't really know what's coming next.

I have a small issue.

What has my graphics class done to me? Ben Franklin's holding an Android g3. Someone has Miley Cyrus hair. The Declaration of Independence is being signed with SHARPIES! And this is just the beginning! By the end of it, I may go so far as to put Robert Downey Jr. in the background or give someone a Barney head! Here I am, at 1:14 in the morning, posting a picture that is so historically wrong that the candles are fluorescent lights. I need sleep.

Out-of-time portrait

Here it is so far, a project based on placing things out of time. All that I have done is repair damages to this image i found on the web. The fun part is yet to come!

Chuck Jones

"All of us must eventually do what the matador does;
go out and face not only the bull, but the crowd.
It does the matador little good,
provides him little satisfaction
to make beautiful passes
in a moonlit pasture"
-Chuck Jones

At first glance this quote inspires no thoughts, and after research it doesn't even seem to exist. However, after reading it several times in different tones, a meaning begins to emerge from it. A meaning that defeats its questioned validity. The matador does not only fight against the bull, but he must fight for the crowd. Without the crowd, the matador has no purpose. No one to cheer him on, nothing to prove himself to, nothing to put on a show for. A crowdless matador is a pointless matador- he can't keep to himself forever, there has to be something to cheer him on.

Death's Messengers have come

My illustration for the Brothers Grimm story Death's messengers is now complete. I wish I could have added more, but the Photoshop I was using was having a problem flickering black whenever i move the cursor onto it.

I Highly Dislike Pixlr.

Well, I have used Pixlr for the first time. Pixlr is great for pixel art and improving upon photographs but is in no way built to be used like Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator. It still beats MS Paint though, with a perfect K.O. However, I will avoid any unnecessary use of the program. I will be getting the full Adobe suite at home soon, so I will have no room to complain.

Death's Messengers, A WIP

The above pictures are components of my illustration of Death's Messengers. the lower image is the progress on the finished work, whereas the upper one is of the sketches i am using.

Art Start- Whatever this is

"The clock strikes 12.
You have to hurry before everything changes.
What do you leave behind?"

What do I leave behind... What do i leave forever...? MY STUPID BUSHY EYEBROWS. These things have weight to them and a mind of their own. Every day they seem to try and replace my eyes. I have evil eyebrows man, and it's scary.

Next Project- Fairy Tale illustration.

The next project I have begun in my Graphic Arts class is an original but inspired illustration of a fairy tale. I plan on illustrating Death's Messengers by the Brothers Grimm. you can read the story here. The style that we must mimic and leave our impression on is none other than the style of Camille Rose Garcia, whose work can be found here.

Art Start- Lewis Carroll

This has to be the one quote from Alice in Wonderland that i can recall. I do not remember exactly when it was said or why, but it conveys quite the message. The only way to fight and escape this cold and cruel reality is to retreat within ourselves, into our imagination. Our place of safety and warmth, a place of calm and freedom. We can be who we want to be and do what we want to do in our imaginations without question. We can don the wings of freedom and fight against this oppressive reality with a weapon we all possess- imagination.

Art Start- Einstein

Albert Einstein, quite an intelligent man. He must have read fairy tales. Anyways, fairy tales are full of real life situations hidden under the fantasy of dragons, faeries, or evil magic. They teach you to lie and get away with it and get out of trouble in general. Fairy tales show that honesty is key in some situations, or that you need some degree of pride to persevere.

Art Start 4- Poe or Poe?

I have nothing to interpret from this at the moment. However, as I looked into the quote, I found that it is actually lyrics from a song called "Terrified Heart" by a musician called Poe. Not Edgar Allan Poe, a different one. Quite easily confused, people spread it as one of Edgar's works.

Art Start 3- Ralph Waldo Emerson

Everyone has their own perception of beauty, but no matter the definition, art is always beautiful to someone.

Art Start 2- Shakespeare

                                                               "Love all,
                                                               Trust a few,
                                                               Do wrong to none"
                                                                 -Shakespeare

This quote here... has a deep meaning somewhere. It promotes me to reflect on any decisions I've made, such as choosing to trust someone with too much and they betray me. Also times that I have chosen to keep trusting someone with my heart and keep on getting hurt. Times I have spited someone that never wronged me.

Nefarious

Recently, Illustration Friday chose "Nefarious" as its weekly subject. Although I am way too late to post this to the site, here is my illustration for it. There are many viewpoints on Death, and quite a popular one is the idea of it being an evil force. Death is the perfect image of evil as it is not quite enjoyed by many,

Art Start 1- Banksy

In my Graphics class we have begun these daily assignments called 'art starts', where we analyze and illustrate or write about a quote or other work of art. Today's was Banksy's "Cancelled Dreams", which can be found a few posts back on my blog. The work, at least in my mind, reflects how today's society seems to hinder our ability to go after what we want and forces us to be content with what we have; breaking our will to aspire from our desires.

The Sandman (unofficial) Issue #76

In my graphic arts class this week, we were faced with the task of creating an original cover for the Sandman comics as if we were continuing the series. "The Man in the Box" would have been the 76th issue, and would be telling of Daniel's internal struggles as he takes over where Morpheus left off.
I used the Burn and Dodge tools to change the shading on the wood, lock, and eye.

Invention step 1

Illustration Friday's subject for the past week was "Invention." It's past due, but I still want to continue this. There won't be as much time to work on this now due to the subject changing to "Nefarious."
